This Monday morning class provides a much needed space in people’s week to play, explore and collaborate on different creative (mainly printmaking) projects. As a printmaker who regularly exhibits and sells her work, Fiona would like the opportunity to teach others printmaking techniques as well as supporting the exploration of a range of materials and being inspired by different artists and printmakers in the group who would like to share their artistic disciplines as well. The group supports each other in creating an environment to allow each other to immerse themselves in creativity.

Presence and Absence.

About once a month we draw from a model; on other days from objects that imply the former presence of the human, the handled or the worn. JLASc provide all materials as experimentation in a variety of media encouraged.

Life drawing (long pose)

The Monday Evening Life Drawing (Long Pose) is one of the Paddock’s longest running, self-organised classes, working each week with a different model.  This is a welcoming group and members enjoy using a variety of media and approaches in their work.  Since January 2025, we have added a “bonus” session from 6:30 to 7:30, where we work without a model to experiment with different approaches and themes each week.  Attending this part is entirely optional and there is no additional cost for the extra time.  When the model arrives at 7:30, we start the 2-hour class as usual.

Portrait Painting (untutored)

The Thursday Morning Portrait class is also a very long-established feature of the Paddock Programme.  Rachael Maldoom and Jeanne McNair co-organise this class, which is structured in 3-week, 3-hour segments, with a clothed model in the same pose for each session.  It is arranged to allow time for members to complete an oil painting over the 3 weeks, but artists may choose to work in any medium they prefer.

Both classes welcome artists at all levels of experience.  Both classes also continue through the half-term break.

This is an untutored workshop with a friendly and informal atmosphere. There are about 10 artists in the group with varying levels of experience. We have the same model in the same pose for three or four weeks. We spend the first hour of the first session drawing short poses, then we settle on a long pose which is held for the rest of the morning and the remaining sessions.

Introducing Oil Painting: The What, Why and Hows

This course is designed for those who want to know more about the What, Whys and Hows of oil painting. Whilst studying for 4 years at the Barcelona Academy of Art to become a figurative artist I had the opportunity to learn from the artist teachers who had years of experimenting and studying under some of the last few living Masters and I am excited to pass on what I know. The first term will divide into 3 blocks and we will immediately start getting our hands dirty as I think “doing” is the best way of learning.

Block 1 – materials

Block 2 – the hows and whys of painting

Block 3 – the hows and whys of details

Academic Figure Drawing

This Workshops are for the person who has always wanted to represent the world around them, to draw a recognisable portrait or to draw an anatomically correct figure. They will be guided classes for learning the fundamental techniques of ‘seeing’. Drawing is the foundation of my practice, the Academic methods of drawing allow you to leap ahead with accuracy and teach you how to see and self correct. My classes are open to all drawing levels, all that is required is enthusiasm.

Learning how to see

This series of workshops is designed for people who love to draw and learn, but also want self led time to experiment and grow their practice with the life model without interruption. I am using the term “drawing” in the sense that we draw with a pencil, charcoal or paint. I have adapted drawing exercises from the Atelier tradition best suited to the exploration of seeing and to growing our understanding of how to translate from the three dimensional to the 2 dimensional.

Printmaking & Bookbinding

This course is a creative exploration of bookbinding and printmaking techniques focusing on book structure, print skills and artistic expression through books. We will explore creative approaches to accordion books and Japanese stab binding, covering skills in stitching, hard covers, folding, windows and using both sides of each book page. We will use linocut and mono-printing techniques to create end papers, book covers and create visual journeys through books.

This course is suitable for beginners and students with some previous bookbinding or printmaking experience.

The course is structured with plenty of scope for your unique artistic expression and is open to all levels of prior experience, including none! The key emphasis is on relaxing & dropping into the ‘now’ of the playful creative process. Each session will start with a short guided meditation

Each term offers a different theme and explores a variety approaches to drawing, painting, printmaking and collage.

Theme this term: Maps and Journeys

This theme provides a lovely analogy for the creative process. Do you start with an itinerary or intuitively follow your feet? Do you travel solo or collaboratively? Do you take the less trodden path? We’ll play with different media and processes, remembering or imagining journeys, creating maps of places and body maps of our individual histories. We’ll also refer to some artists who’ve used maps and journeys in their own work.

The groups are mixed which works well! You are welcome to join if you have no experience, a little bit of experience or lots. Each class starts with a short mindfulness meditation to create a pause before we start to play and create, with the emphasis very much on the process.
